About Navia yarn

In 10 years, Navia has become one of the major wool producers on the Faroe Islands. It is a family-run business based in Toftir on the island of Eysturoy. Managing Director, Óli Kristian á Torkilsheyggi is always looking for ways to add to the wonderful range of yarns that his company produces, whether by adding a new colour or by experimenting with a new blend of wool until he achieves the perfect result he is searching for. From the start, Navia have commissioned stunning patterns from contemporary Faroese designers and we will be regularly adding new patterns to our website.

Uno, Duo and Trio yarns are made from Faroese wool blended with Shetland wool and Australian lambswool. It is a very high-quality yarn and has a lovely soft feel. It comes in natural shades and a large range of beautiful colours.

Tradition consists of 80% Faroese wool and 20% English lambswool. The yarn has been produced to meet a demand for old-style yarns that were popular in earlier times in the Faroe Islands for knitting "skipstroyggjir" or boatman's jerseys. In Faroese, the yarn is called "samfingið" meaning "unsorted" i.e. the coarser fibres are not plucked out. This results in a characterful rustic yarn that is especially suitable for rugged jumpers and jackets. As a concession to modern tastes, the blending with 20% English lambswool results in a softer feel.
